Breakdancers in Paris!

The other night, I was meeting some friends by the metro and came across a HUGE crowd of people, obviously watching a performance. The music was blasting and everyone was cheering.

A group of breakdancers (I later learned that they frequent this street performance venue and are really popular in the Bastille area) were showing off their sets. They were incredible and definitely crowd pleasers. Check out some pics and videos I grabbed of the show! Easily one of the coolest things I've come across on the streets of Paris!

French Four-Year-Old Theta Love

Today, when C came home from school, we did a little playing as usual. She was showing me how she can make all kinds of shapes with her hands - hearts, stars, circles, squares, etc. Then she made a kite with her little, paint-covered, four-year-old hands and I saw a future Theta right before my eyes!

Lovin' this pic!

Off to Belgium

This past weekend, I took advantage of one of my program's "excursions" to Belgium! We took a (6:30am!!) bus on Saturday to Bruges for the day, then headed to Brussels for the night and all day Sunday.

Bruges

Bruges was a BEAUTIFUL little town. It really is the Venice of the north. The egg-shaped city is surrounded on either side by canals, one of which is called the Lac D'Amour or "Lake of Love" - a mistranslation that sounded so pretty and wonderful, it just stuck with the city. The interior part of the city is also interlaced with tons of canals. The streets are almost entirely void of cars, making the atmosphere all the more surreal. (Residents are reimbursed for every kilometer they bike to work each month, so pretty much everyone gets around by bike). The food was also definitely something to write home about. The french fries (which actually originate from Belgium) are absolutely delicious, and don't even get me started on the WAFFLES! Everything you may have heard about Belgian waffles is absolutely true. They are incredible. People, these things are even filled with sugar to add to the delicious-factor. The only thing a little odd about Bruges is the feeling that you are in Disneyland... The entire southern part of the city was filled with tourists, which was a little unsettling at times. We quickly got over the sentiment though. A mouthful of waffle pretty much helps you forget any and all of your worries.
The city seemed to be totally on the same page with my irrational love for french fries... :)

We also found a chocolate museum...
...where we came across this chocolate statue of Barack Obama.
Oh well, Bruges, you almost scored a 100%.

Brussels was equally wonderful and definitely the beer capital of Europe (in addition to being the actual capital of Europe - the EU hangs out in the city and makes all sorts of important decisions...or something like that). We went out Saturday night and found ourselves at an incredible bar with 46 beers on tap. The bartenders were incredibly helpful and picked the perfect beer for all of us!

Sunday was a very early morning, but fortunately, we had lots of time to spend in Brussels. The first order of business was to find the Mannekin Pis - a fountain that supposedly represents the "free spirit" of Brussels. And here it is!

Yes, it is in fact a small, naked boy peeing.
Also, in case you are having trouble with the proportions of this city-symbolizing statue, here is another picture to give you a better idea of the scale of this very important fountain.

A little underwhelming, but an experience all the same.

The rest of the day in Brussels was spent wandering the city, seeing the palaces and justice buildings, and taking a quick detour into the Magritte Museum - there were of course cones of french fries and chocolate covered waffles and strawberries involved as well. If you know me at all, you realize that Belgium is the definition of my food pyramid. Mmmmm...

After a full two days of walking and touring, I was glad to see Paris (and my bed!) again. Just one more week of work to get through and then Spring Break! Almost there!

Happenings

Some interesting things that happened to me today:

Thing #1: Day trip to Chartres
I went to Chartres - a medieval town an hour out of Paris - with my art class today for an on sight analysis of the Chartres cathedral. It was so beautiful! Plus, we topped off the afternoon with a DELICIOUS crêpe lunch. Sooo heavenly! If you're looking to buy a cottage somewhere in France by any chance, check out Chartres. :)

Thing #2: Clothed Dog
This doesn't really have much to do with anything, but I was really amused... I was walking down the street and a little blur of orange caught my eye. Turns out, this little orange blur was in fact a tiny little dog dressed oh-so-preppily with his orange and blue Ralph Lauren rugby - collar popped and all. Oh, Paris...

Thing #3: Excitement at Zara
So i'm shopping in Zara. (Picked up a great jacket by the way - not really pertinent to the story, but whatever). I'm waiting in line to check out and see a person shopping, items in hand, heading toward the front display room. Said person catches eye contact with an employee behind the cash register. This person then proceeds to BOLT for the front door, items flailing in the air. He almost makes it out the door, but is then met by the front security guard. Before we even knew it, he was on the floor, tackled by this heroic security man, surrounded by Zara employees. Then, all of a sudden, all the employees return to work and Mr. Thief is gone. Everyone continues about their business as if nothing happened. No biggie. Just a typical afternoon of shopping at good old Zara.

That's all. Just felt the need to share this exciting/bizarre day I had. Off to Belgium tomorrow, so look out for a future post about my weekend adventure!

All About Alice.

As requested, here is a closer look at the adorable devil-cat we all know and love. These are some moments I just couldn't pass up and managed to capture with my oh so incredible cat-stalking skills. I am, however, a little worried that these skill are early signs of crazy-cat-lady syndrome...
Oh well! Enjoy the wonder that is, Alice:

She acts so cute and curls up in my sheets...

Then, when she thinks i'm not looking, goes for the slippers.

This I just have no words for.

Those Silly Spaniards.

Back to Barcelona! This time, with guest appearances from M's parents and sister!

I got a chance to visit with the other side of the family this weekend in beautiful Barcelona. Getting out of the metro stop onto Passeig de Gràcia and feeling the warm sun on my face, I realized this: in a weather competition, Barcelona will ALWAYS beat Paris. You know it's gonna be a great weekend when you escape cloudy, rainy, cold weather and pop up out of the ground to find clear, blue, sunny skies. Woot!

It was great to be visiting Spain alongside M's familia. [Shout out to his parents' FIRST EVER trip to Europe - and a successfully awesome one at that from what I've heard!] We spent the days touring the sights, stopping only to take in the views andstuff ourselves with delicious Spanish food - all done while keeping an ever keen eye out for the LouisVuitton-RayBan guys, of course.

Highlights of the trip include:
-Climbing Montjuïc (via gondola...)
-Visiting forts
-Checking out the Olympic Village
-Avoiding bathroom emergencies
-Enjoying the famous fountain show
-Tackling an insanely crowded and busy day of shopping
-Visiting some Gaudí sights
-Getting caught in a freak rain/hail storm
-Making multiple appearances at Ciudad Comtal - the world's most delicious tapas place
-Eating burgers too big to actually fit in your mouth

Yup, that's how the Spaniards do it.
Here are some pictures with more weekend highlights:

Couldn't really tell you what was going on here...

Posing with the parents.

This officially marks my last visit to Spain during my semester in Europe. I'm starting to flip out a little bit now that there are LESS THAN TWO MONTHS left of this semester. (!). Time is running out and I have so much I want to do!

Well, adios Spain! Who know when we will meet again?

Pictures Pictures!

As promised, here are some pictures of my parents' visit to Paris. As you can see, my mom became quite the photographer while out here. All of the artsy photos can be credited to her. Actually pretty much all the photos can be credited to her, as I was very lazy with my camera during their visit :) Enjoy!

Au Revoir Les Parents.

After a wonderful week spent with my lovely parents, it is time to say goodbye.

M and J spent a lovely week in Paris, freestyling the city with absolutely no plans. It was great to have them here, and definitely a good way to tone down the stress from the Mid-Semester Freak Out (which most definitely still exists in Europe). We didn't even do anything particularly special, which is what made this visit so great. It just felt like home. Plus, who wouldn't absolutely enjoy a week's worth of delicious french cuisine with the rents!

The Parents stayed up in Montmartre, so they really got a feel for my neighborhood. My mom was loving the butte and they spent pretty much every night enjoying their chocolat chaud and vin chaud along with the spectacular views of the city. (The delicious treats definitely make up for all the hiking involved in actually getting up the butte. 84 stairs followed by 92 stairs - my dad counted cuz he's such a coolster).

It feels like they've been here forever, but at the same time, I can't believe it's time for them to leave already! At least this goodbye is a bittersweet one: goodbye to the parents, hello to M and his family in Barcelona :).

In other, random news: I had my first "exposé" this past Wednesday. It's basically like an oral presentation, only way more specific and impossible to complete entirely correctly. Plus, my Prof. has been known to give comments such as "that was average," or "that was a disaster - I wouldn't even call that an exposé." Needless to say, I was a little nervous, but fortunately, my group members are super talented BSers and great at whipping up these presentations. We earned a simple "bien" from our Prof. Hey, I'll definitely take that over "you seemed to have missed the point of the assignment..." Teachers over here are ruthless!

Anyway, more to come from my adventures in Barcelona, and look out for pictures from my week with the rents!
